Capital College welcomes Brazilian students for eight-week study programme

Edinburgh College has been proud to host four state-sponsored students from Brazil, improving their English language skills and giving them an insight into the Travel and Tourism, Hospitality and Design sectors.

The students from the Paraiba region in the north-west of Brazil have spent eight weeks at the College’s Granton and Sighthill campuses – taking part in a series of English lessons as well as further theory and practical elements of subject areas chosen by themselves prior to arrival.

Two students – Ana and Gabriel – infilled on to a Fashion and Textiles course, one student – Aisha joined a Professional Cookery class, and Karla opted to study Travel and Tourism. Each student spent time with lecturers and fellow students learning key principles and techniques of their course area as well as completing project work.

In addition, a social programme was designed to allow the students to visit key Edinburgh landmarks including Calton Hill, the National Museum. The Botanic Gardens and Edinburgh Castle, as well as trips further afield to Glasgow and Fife.

The Brazilian cohort’s visit was run in coordination with an initiative called Conexão Mundo (“World Connection”). Conexão Mundo is a programme conceived and funded by the government of Paraiba. Its objectives are to encourage the internationalisation of Paraiba and grow its prosperity through international exchange initiatives for students and staff from state schools.

We have been learning lots in Fashion and Textiles including sales and about Tartan, and we have been making bags to be used in a fashion show. It has been a great experience; the people are so good to us and we have explored the city – it is a beautiful city. We have tried to explore as much as possible and have visited places like Calton Hill, Holyrood Palace and national galleries.
Ana Luisa
My favourite thing to make has been brownies or soup – particularly tomato soup – the soup is really good here. The kitchens have machines I never knew existed and I have learned lots. The people here are also very kind and help you when you get lost
Aisha
It’s been a privilege to have Aisha, Ana, Gabriel and Karla studying with us at our College. They have all settled terrifically in their classes and have really embraced this learning experience. We’re proud to have been a part of this programme which aligns with our ethos of providing educational opportunities to students who otherwise may not have had them. Our thanks go to the four students and our partners in the Conexão Mundo programme for a brilliant eight weeks.
