Mathematics is essential in everyday life, as it enables us to make sense of the world around us by utilising logic, reasoning, and problem-solving skills. National 4 Maths involves using numerical data and abstract terms to interpret and communicate information mathematically, and applying this knowledge to different situations.
It is ideal for students who wish to undertake an entry-level Maths qualification to progress to National 5 Maths.
Course Fees: £400 per subject. Fees will be confirmed when an application has been processed.
What you will learn
This course is divided into the following 3 units:
- Numeracy
- Expressions and Formulae
- Relationships
How the course is assessed
- Each unit will be assessed when completed.
- There is also an Added Value assessment, which covers material taken from all three previous units. Part 1 of the Added Value assessment is non-calculator, and Part 2 allows the use of a calculator.
- You must complete all of the units plus the Added Value assessment to achieve the National 4 Maths award.
Number of days per week
- Part-time day class, every Thursday 2.15 PM to 5.15 PM. Students need to attend every week at the allocated time.
- Plus, a recommended minimum of at least 3 hours of self-study
Entry requirements
- No formal maths qualification required; a pass at National 3 maths or equivalent would be preferred
- Applicants should provide a personal statement in support of their application, which includes the reason they are choosing to study National 4 Mathematics.

- National 4 Mathematics is accepted as part of the entry requirements for a large number of courses in Science, Engineering, Construction, as well as progression to National 5 Mathematics.
