Course overview

Electrical Engineering NC Level 5 is run in collaboration with ScottishPower and is designed to introduce you to electrical engineering and prepare you for an apprenticeship. 

As part of the course, you will attend sessions with ScottishPower at their training centre and may be offered a place on their apprentice programme. This training will involve learning about overhead lines and jointing, and cabling practical skills. Practical work experience with ScottishPower will help you gain knowledge of the engineering industry and enhance your employability skills. 

You will be taught by staff with extensive experience in the electrical engineering industry. You will also have access to Edinburgh College workshops, where you will use up-to-date technology and equipment. The course is based on both the workshop and classroom, ensuring you get practical and technical skills. The course will also prepare you for further study in Electrical Engineering, such as the NC Higher Electrical Engineering offered at Edinburgh College. 

What you will learn

The course is a mixture of workshops and classroom sessions, providing an introduction to the knowledge and skills needed for either an apprenticeship or a higher level of studies in Electrical Engineering. Subjects studied include:

  • Electrical Principles
  • Testing and Measurement
  • Safe Working Practice
  • Wiring Skills

Placement information

  • This course is run in collaboration with ScottishPower. Within the delivery, there is on-site bespoke training at the ScottishPower training centre. This will encompass overhead lines and jointing practical skills.

How the course is assessed

  • You will be assessed at the end of each unit.
  • All units within the course must be completed to gain the full award.

Number of days per week

  • 3 days per week 

Entry requirements

  • Four subjects at National 4 Level including English, Maths and one Science. Please note we do not accept Application of Maths. 

Information on Tests / Auditions / Interview Requirements

  • You will be required to attend an interview with staff from ScottishPower and Edinburgh College
